Gene Symbol ALCAM
Synonyms CD166 | MEMD
Gene Description ALCAM, activated leukocyte cell adhesion molecule, is a transmembrane glycoprotein and a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily that facilitates cell clustering via homophilic and heterophilic interactions, and thereby plays a role in cell growth, migration, differentiation, and hematopoiesis (PMID: 12113472, PMID: 30778704). Increased expression of ALCAM has been identified in several solid tumors, including esophageal, prostate, and bladder carcinomas, pancreatic cancer (PMID: 20952758), melanoma (PMID: 10702391), oral squamous cell carcinoma (PMID: 19142865), and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (PMID: 16024937), and reduced expression has been identified in breast cancer (PMID: 15318930).
