Gene Description

BIRC5, baculoviral IAP repeat containing 5, is also know as survivin and belongs to the Inhibitor of Apoptosis (IAP) gene family, and thus, plays a role in preventing apoptosis (PMID: 31439015) and regulation of autophagy (PMID: 30948431). BIRC5 is often overexpressed in many different types of cancers (PMID: 18075512), including glioma (PMID: 29703049), squamous cell carcinoma (PMID: 29587347), renal cell carcinoma (PMID: 27411378), lung adenocarcinoma (PMID: 31093306), and breast cancer (PMID: 27592112).
