Gene Symbol MUC5AC
Synonyms leB | MUC5 | mucin | TBM
Gene Description MUC5AC, mucin 5AC, oligomeric mucus/gel-forming, encodes a mucin glycoprotein that is secreted from goblet cells and plays a role in the protection and lubrication of exposed surfaces, serving as a component of human tears and mucosal secretions (PMID: 9888425), and is a key factor in the innate mucosal defense, including involvement in allergic inflammation (PMID: 25687754). Decreased MUC5AC expression has been observed in gastric adenocarcinoma (PMID: 23801416) while overexpression of MUC5AC has been identified in colorectal cancer (PMID: 32098629).
